Esquiva is a low dodge or escape that you can use to avoid kicks by shifting down to the right or left depending on where the kick is coming from. Esquivas make Capoeira different from other types of martial arts in that it goes with the flow of the attack while at the same time releasing a potentially more devastating attack. Most Capoeira attacks are full kicks that can cause more injury if you try to block them instead of dodging them. There are mainly two types of Esquiva, namely Esquiva de Baixa and Esquiva Lateral.

Esquiva de Baixa

The move is similar to Ginga, but your body will be closer and lower to the ground. The hands and the legs move together while bringing the hips to the ground. You bend the torso forward, bringing your head lower, using your left hand to protect the face.

Esquiva Lateral

This move is translated as “side dodge” or “side escape,” and you can move to the right or left side depending on the direction of the kick. You can use one hand to support the body while the other protects your face.

Esquiva Diagonal

Esquiva diagonal is another example of dodge that simultaneously goes with forwarding advancement. Instead of going off to the side to dodge an attack, you step diagonally to the right or left of the attack. This offers you a chance at counterattack where the right arm will protect the face, and the other arm maintains body balance.
